SKF insulated bearings are specially‑engineered anti‑electric‑erosion rolling bearings, designed to block stray shaft currents and prevent electrical damage to bearing raceways, rolling elements and lubricant, which are frequently generated in variable‑frequency motors, generators and electric‑driven equipmentSKF. Uncontrolled electric current passing through bearings will produce micro‑crater pits, surface burn marks and premature grease degradation, resulting in unexpected breakdowns and expensive downtime. SKF provides two mature insulated solutions: INSOCOAT coated‑insulation bearings and hybrid ceramic insulated bearings.

SKF INSOCOAT bearings adopt high‑purity aluminium‑oxide insulating layer plasma‑sprayed on the outer surface of inner ring or outer ring, then sealed with special resin coating for moisture‑proof performance. Standard insulation resistance reaches minimum 200 MΩ, and advanced‑grade coating can reach 400 MΩ, withstanding DC voltage up to 3000VSKF . Their overall outer dimensions, tolerances and mounting requirements fully comply with ISO standards, which means they are 100 % interchangeable with standard non‑insulated bearings, requiring no modification to existing shafts or housings during replacement. INSOCOAT is the cost‑effective choice for DC and low‑frequency stray‑current conditions. Common suffix codes include VL0241 (outer‑ring insulation, 500V), VL0246 (outer‑ring high‑grade insulation), VL2071 (inner‑ring insulation) and VA309 series for railway traction motors.

SKF hybrid insulated bearings are constructed with steel inner‑outer rings and silicon‑nitride ceramic rolling elements. Ceramic balls are naturally non‑conductive, completely cutting‑off the electric‑current path between two rings. This type is highly recommended for high‑frequency pulse currents generated by frequency converters. Besides outstanding insulation capability, hybrid bearings feature lighter rolling‑element weight, lower friction, higher speed‑limit, excellent anti‑wear performance and longer grease service life under poor‑lubrication conditions.

Both insulated‑bearing series are available in single‑row deep‑groove ball bearing and cylindrical roller bearing configurations. Standard open, shielded and sealed variants are offered to adapt to dust‑prone or humid working environments. Compared with alternative insulation measures such as insulated sleeves, insulating housings or shaft‑grounding devices, SKF integrated insulated bearings simplify installation, reduce extra‑part costs and deliver more stable long‑term insulation reliability.
